Our Summer field trip will be exploring the western Upper Peninsula including the Black River Scenic Byway in the Ottawa National Forest and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Participants will get to see beautiful scenery including multiple waterfalls and the Lake of the Clouds. Many of the stops will require hiking in Michigan’s Old Growth Forests that have been preserved in these parks. We will explore the geology of the Porcupine Mountains July 28-30. We will visit Lake of the Clouds, see the town of Nonesuch, and view several waterfalls. On the last day, we will have an opportunity to tour the Humboldt Facility where the Eagle Mine’s ore is processed. We will start the trip at 9:30 am on July 28th at Potawotomi Falls, so you should plan to arrive in the Porcupines area by July 27th. We will finish in the late afternoon of the 30th – participants can leave from the Champion/Humboldt area. Due to limited parking and facilities at many of the sites in the park, we will be limiting the number of participants to the first 15 people who register and will be encouraging participants to carpool. We will maintain a waiting list.
